Some marine animals die or may be seriously injured by fishing gear. This accidental capture is often due to the fact that some species are attracted to the food offered and are captured at the time they try to access; this is the case of longlines, but also in some nets and traps. In other cases, the capture can be given when the animal accidentally approaches the art (as is often the case with some nets).
For many fishermen the frequency of these episodes is a hindrance as they cause discomfort and slow down all work, may damage the art and lose fishing opportunities.
Through this project we intend to involve the fishing sector, both professional and recreational fishermen, to improve our knowledge of the problem and seek solutions for a reduction of accidental catches in fishing gear. The information that this sector can provide is very valuable to understand the relevant factors in the different species and will allow us to move towards a solution to the problem, both to help the protection of the marine megafauna and to reduce the inconvenience and costs of the fishermen involved in these events.
